Not only does the hotel provide excellent accommodation and value for money, but it acts as a natural jumping off point for many outdoor-adrenalin-filled activities. A recent review of Looe has revealed the town as one of the places to be for people seeking thrills in the South West.

Based about a 30 minute drive from Looe is a number of adventure activities suitable for people of all ages. They include kayaking, coasteering (clambering about rocks and cliffs and jumping into the sea), a giant swing, and the UK’s longest ever zip line! Prices vary from season but you do get a lot of bang for your buck.

Based near the zip line is a Go Kart track. Geared towards petrol heads everywhere the centre runs open sessions as well as grand prix’s that members of the public can enter. There’s even a smaller track for the younger driver making the track one of the most popular in the south west. The Old Bridge House Hotel can provide details of the track along with all other local adventures available for tourists and locals.

The town of Looe itself is wonderfully picturesque and on the surface, it looks extremely tranquil and relaxed. Dig a little deeper however and you seen realise how much is available for the more active holidaymaker. The Old Bridge House Hotel provides a perfect view of the harbour and the scale of the countryside around Looe. Many guests often take long hikes up into the hills and along the coast. This makes the town perfect for both seasoned and novice adventurers. The owners of The Old Bridge House are extremely welcoming and can provide visitors with as little or as much information about the things to see and do when staying in Looe – click here for the website. On top of that they’ll even be flexible about what time you’d like breakfast in the morning – as long as it’s not past midday!

Overall many people tend to see Looe as something out of the 19th Century – quaint and from another time. In fact Looe is so much more.

The town runs charter fishing as one of the many activities and with a 32 foot Catamaran available to navigate the sometime choppy waters around the coast, visitors can be guaranteed a fairly wild ride.

Winding down

A review of The Old Bridge House Hotel recently described it as ‘one of the best places to stay in the south west’. Situated just off the Old Bridge connecting East and West Looe (hence the name), the hotel provides luxurious accommodation at affordable prices whilst still retaining the local charm and aesthetic of the town. When you meet the owners Colin and Liz, it is not hard to see why. Their easy manner and friendly attitude washes over all who stay at the hotel and their knowledge of the locality is a definite plus for anyone seeking thrills and spills.

If you’re looking for an adventure holiday with a difference, head down to Looe this year and if you’re lucky enough to base yourself at The Old Bridge House Hotel you can be happy that you can rest your weary muscles in peace.

The recent furore surrounding the England rugby team’s decision to go bungee jumping on their day off only served to remind me how much I’d love to tackle a jump in New Zealand. The players are over there for the World Cup and some commentators suggested it was a less than safe pursuit for professional athletes 48 hours before a big game. Bollocks. Bungee jumping is probably safer than rugby! And if you don’t take the chance to do it while you’re in New Zealand – the unofficial home of bungee – then you’ll probably never forgive yourself. I know I regret not having a go when I was over there a few years ago. Mind you, I was there for a family wedding and it was either bungee jumping or help collect red diesel, so we could actually have enough power for the evening party. I guess my Grandma would never have spoken to me ever again if I’d picked the first option….

New Zealand may well be where bungee was born, but it has been surpassed by other destinations as the ultimate jump site. I thought about trying to write a definitive “Top Five” based on reports from friends and other thrill seekers, but decided I could only really write with authority about those places where I had experienced the thrill of hurtling towards the ground or a body of water with only a large elastic band saving me from disaster. So, in no particular order, here are my favourite bungee jumping sites around the world.

The Corinth Canal in Greece is spanned by an impressive bridge, which is used for bungee is the summer months. Gets kind of busy with passing tourists and a few pissed up stag parties even venture out there as well, but the canyon you’re jumping into is actually pretty narrow at this point, which makes the descent even more spectacular! Without a doubt the scariest bungee jump I’ve ever done was from the 150 metre-high Ponte Colossus in Italy – an initial free-fall of 4.5 seconds will challenge the resolve of even the toughest jumpers. Finally, the highest bungee jumping venue in Europe is at Niouc in the Swiss Alps at an impressive 190 metres. Set in an even narrower canyon than the Corinth Canal, the descent somehow seems faster – which makes up for the very scary wobbly bridge that you have to cross to get to the jump platform…

It’s summer, which means that it’s time for some water sport activity! One of the best is surfing (it still remains one of my favourites) and if you look hard enough you can find some great coaches and resorts to try out be you a beginner or a veteran. Wherever you end up though make sure you have a good broadband connection for sharing your experiences with your mates back home.

…watch your existing service provider doesn’t hit you with high roaming charges before you set out…

Having the best roaming prices for your journey is an essential for any holiday adventurer- surfer or otherwise. You’ll want to upload your photos and message people as quickly as possible but without a decent connection and price plan you might as well buy an old camera and wait a few weeks for the photos to be developed. Don’t underestimate your current mobile phone charges when abroad as you could be unpleasantly surprised when you get the bill. Take a little time to do some investigation before you head off to the beach. There are some great deals out there. You just have to be quite particular when looking.

Once you’ve sorted your phone out the next thing you’ll want to know is where are the best places to go to surf? Fortunately help is at hand and many national papers like The Independent have been publishing a whole slew of guidance articles on where to go. For me one of the best places I ever surfed was in Portugal near Lagos. Placed at the southern western tip of the country the beaches are a gateway between the Mediterranean and Atlantic and as such you can find a good mix of waves suitable for pros and beginners. The water is a little colder then what you might be used to in the Med, but to be honest when you’re in the wetsuit it doesn’t make much of a difference. Lagos itself is a beautiful city to explore especially in the evening and can make a nice break from the surfing if you do get physically tired.

If your cash flow is in short supply though and you can’t afford to travel too far afield then there are a string of beaches very close to home in northern France. Brittany boasts some 2,800 kilometres of coastline and is often compared to Cornwall in terms of its beauty and water. The difference is in the details though and there are many towns and beaches all along the shore that are surf mad – the Atlantic once again providing the swell that all boarders crave. Finistere is great for messing about and not just on boards. Sea kayaking, sailing, kite surfing and sand yachting are all very popular with the locals and the tourists.

This summer you can take your mind off all your problems back home, catch some waves and take some pictures. Surfing is one of the great stress reliefs in the world and doubles up as a fun workout.

You can’t swim with the sharks in the UK – not unless a particularly thick great white has got seriously confused and is roaming around the stony beaches of Brighton. Nor can you mountain bike down the Grand Canyon or scale Mount Everest. But, the simple, pleasant little UK, minus any real life-threatening creatures or top world mountains, still offers a wide range of thrill-inducing breaks.

First off, Britain adopted bunjee-jumping with a vengeance. One of the best spots for this thrill-filled few seconds is off Chelsea Bridge in London, where you have to ascend to a giant crane raised hundreds of feet above this historic capital city. The crane is sited just off the bridge, but the bungee drop itself is above the River Thames, on top of a site that King Henry VIII of the six wives fame and his daughter Queen Elizabeth would have known well.

As you plummet towards the waters and hope the elastic bungee cord is going to work, you have a few seconds to contemplate history – your own – before bouncing up and down safely, surreptitiously wiping away the sweat or other secretions.

Abseiling down mountain faces in the ranges of Scotland, Wales or the Peak District of England is another scary favourite. There is nothing like having your nose pressed to a rock face as you drop backwards down a steep cliff for making you wonder why on earth you are doing it.

For both foreigners and British residents, there is a sure-fire way of funding these holidays, whether a short, weekend break or a longer, more leisurely trip. UK teaching jobs are plentiful, are available throughout the country, and can often be short-term as well as permanent. British schools want you, and you want to come to Britain. A perfect match.

Whether you prefer the peaks or the pits, Britain can offer thrill-seekers the best, that is, the worst, of all experiences.

Similar Posts:
The Streets of Shanghai : Shanghai - China’s most…
Taking historical trips around Africa : No historical tourism…
Brighton : Brighton is surely a must visit place for those who…
Driving on Scotland’s roads : Despite not being a large…

The biggest thrill I can experience from a holiday is doing something that is totally alien, totally outside of my comfort zone and totally different from my normal way of life. I most recently stayed at an eco glamping site in the beautiful Galicia (northern Spain) called Mino Valley Retreats where your accommodation choice was that of either a native American tipi or a Mongolian yurt. The exciting thing about staying at the retreat was the back to nature experience and waking up to the sole noise of a birds chorus. I opted to stay in the tipi as the yurt was described as the more ‘luxurious’option and I wanted to go for fullest eco experience I could. Cooking was done on a gas stove outside and as there was no electricity in the tipi what is known as an earth fridge was supplied to keep my food fresh in the summers heat. The retreat is hidden away in a lush green valley beside the meandering River Mino and you really do feel as though you are in the middle of nowhere. However not surprisingly you still get reception and the ability to access internet worldwide on your mobile phone even though you are out in the sticks – I spent most of the time with mine turned off!! Washing was done beneath the bliss of a solar shower and the compost toilet facilities meant that hygiene was not at all compromised. The experience is delightful and a completely back to basics way of living was a welcome escape from the normal hustle and bustle of everyday life.

I would urge anyone looking for a holiday with a difference to give it a go, the area is rich with sights to see and things to do – like swimming in the plunge pool of a nearby waterfall, an absolutely incredible experience!!

Not all thrill seekers can afford to go bungee-jumping in New Zealand or snowmobile racing in Canada. Some of us only have UK teaching jobs, so we’re lucky if we can afford to spend a few days camping in the Lake District! Just because we have to stay a bit closer to home doesn’t mean we have to miss out on all the fun, though. There are centres dedicated to extreme sports all over the UK these days, though some parts of the country are better known for their thrill seeking than others.

One of the big adventure sports centres in the UK is based around the small Scottish town of Aberfeldy in Highland Perthshire. What’s really perfect about a holiday in this part of the UK is that there is plenty for the whole family to do; after all, not everyone is into white water rafting or mountain biking or off-roading! There are plenty of pleasant walking routes in the Perthshire hills, historic attractions like Dunkeld Cathedral and enough distilleries that you could visit two a day for a fortnight and still not have seen them all! I wouldn’t recommend signing up for any of the extreme sports that are offered in the Aberfeldy area if you’ve had a few drams though…

A lot of the activities take place on the River Tay, which is much narrower and faster-flowing here than the wide expanse of water that you find in Dundee, where the river meets the sea. There is even a world championship standard kayaking course. A word of warning: don’t have one lesson and then try and show off to your kids that you can make it through without getting wet. They don’t call it world championship standard for nothing!

Many people get to the point whereby they simply need to escape, but if your escaping means getting away for a long break what will you do about your beloved animals? Send them to a kennel; get a house sitter, or how about bringing them with you? After all they deserve a break too surely?

For a dog this could well be understandable, a cat could be a little harder (especially if the cat is fully accustomed to the great big outdoors). How about a horse? If you are driving to your destination, and there is a field and stables available to house the horse then why not? Simply organise your horse box insurance and away you go.

If however leaving your pet behind simply isn’t an option, you have plenty of other options available to you. Friends and family will always be available to look after your pets should you need to call upon their services. However if you become a little stuck for options, don’t despair as you still have other options.

Pet sitting services are available, as many know that pets are used to their own home rather than being sent off. There are companies who offer a pet, dog or house sitting service. While some may find this a huge risk, as you have no idea who will be going to your house, you can be assured that you will be offered a professional service with no complaints.

If you would rather place your pet in the care of the kennels (remember what you do is purely down to choice). Kennels are simply the dog version of a holiday, so you never know – they may just relax as much as you.

The Indian subcontinent is blessed with nature’s bounties. One of the biggest gifts of Mother Nature is the Himalayas up north. Not only do they tower above the sub-continent majestically beckoning adventure seekers to walk on its chest and conquer its summit but they also unleash the fury of a large network of rivers. White water enthusiasts are treated to a high energy ride with the water surging out of the lofts of the Himalayas over the boulders lining the riverbeds whirling and swishing their way out from the confines of the mountain.

The Ganga River which originates from Gaumukh in Garhwal region is a superb river for inflatable rafts. Buoying yourself on the raft and riding over the water body exuding a wildness and strength is a challenge for man. A human cannot contain the fury of the wild but you can grow in spirit and learn to appreciate the brute ruggedness of this creation of the Almighty. A simple thing such as water can give you life by quenching your thirst and also be a danger to life if not respected and handled with care. That is the thrill of white water rafting in Rishikesh.

The first day reach base camp and get acquainted with the area around taking in the first glimpse of the river and its behavior. The second day you can canoe down to a more tame set of rapids near Shivpuri and hit some of the known entities of the river such as The Wall, Black Money, Cross Fire, and Three Blind Mice Rapids. Once you have had a taste of this adrenaline rush you will be begging for more. That is when you hit Rishikesh and tackle the Return to Sender, Roller Coaster, Golf Course, etc. Word has it that the intoxication and exuberance of riding the raging rapids is like wrestling down nature’s creature.

A rafting holiday is something that you should experience at least once in your life, especially if your daily profession of being a mortgage broker or professor does not give you enough adrenalin rush.

I dont know if you need a trailer insurance, but I am sure you should find money and time to go there…

I begin to write this story without any experience in these endeavors, but hurry to not miss the time before the details of my memories of traveling to Cuba are gone.

I hope to have a useful future enthusiast, decided to experience the different world of people from the island of freedom.

So it all started in late August 2009 when my friend spontaneously decided that it is time to realize that its far-off dream. Cuba has long attracted me for several reasons. One is that I have a passion for everything in December as speaking Spanish, the second - for three years dancing Cuban salsa and quite often we have talked about the third - to see or rather to remember the social system that still reign there, and naturally for the sake of journey.

So, 10 days after our conversation I had already bought tickets and accommodations committed to the end of November 2009 Now the little details about it. Our flight was Sofia with Bulgaria Air Madrid (BGN 110 in both directions) and Madrid-Havana with Air Europe (624 euros). To return ticket paid in total by 1350 per person - a pretty decent price, although a month before the flight prices for the flight (to Hawaii) fell slightly, as well as those of Air France, but one does not know. Another option is to travel with Air Comet. Air Europe and Air Comet Airlines are Spanish.

In terms of accommodation in Cuba have an excellent opportunity so-called casa particular. These are legalized rooms that Cubans rent against which the state paid monthly installments. Entitled to give only two rooms and a contribution due to the state whether they had guests during the month or not. In Havana, the tax is about 260 CUC per month.

CUC is an abbreviation for peso convertible - this is one of two official currencies operating in the country. Another is the peso cubano or moneda nacional, or in short CUP. CUC is seen as the currency in Cuba (Cubans call it divisa, ie currency) and is designed for tourists, 1 Euro = 1,33 CUC. A CUP Cubans receive their monthly salaries, pay a minimal amount of their monthly rations food, utilities, taxis and others at 1 CUC = 24 CUP.

Have you ever fancied a true open sea trip, like the one you have always seen on the movies but never experienced? Well, this is what Spain can offer you… A true sea experience on a yacht - you can visit several amazing places of interest just with the yacht you are going to get from Malaga and enjoy the summer of your life. It won’t cost you an arm and a leg either (although I doubt that you can use Tesco discount vouchers).
The trip usually starts from Malaga - this is where you can hire quite a good yacht with your friends or family and get several maps of recommended routes. The most pleasant route is the North-West-South one which would be quite a thrilling experience and also an opportunity to explore so many different places.
Leaving from Malaga, your next stop of the journey is Almeria - an amazing place in Spain that is worth visiting because of its beautiful old part, the great shopping opportunities and an insight in the typical Spanish culture. Leaving from there you can stop by Ibiza - some nice time spent on the island which is located in the west of Spain in the Mediterranean sea would not only recharge your batteries but may also exhaust them - this place is some of the hottest party spots in Europe.
Heading west would then take you to Mallorca - one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world - a great opportunity to have some fun on the amazing beaches and do some incredible trips around the beautiful and exotic island. And after Mallorca prepare for a long sea journey, the one that would be the strongest thrill - travelling for two days on the board of your yacht would show you not only the beauty of the open sea but will also leave you with remarkable stories to tell, just like the ones you have heard from old sailors.
Your last stop would change your opinion that everything is coming to an end - Marocco is something completely different from you would have already seen - exploring North Africa would the last exciting opportunity in your trip before going back. And once you are back, this week of sea adventures and exploration would leave you the best memories about the most thrilling and spectacular summer in your life.
