Peaks and Troughs in Britain

Peaks and Troughs in Britain

You can’t swim with the sharks in the UK – not unless a particularly thick great white has got seriously confused and is roaming around the stony beaches of Brighton. Nor can you mountain bike down the Grand Canyon or scale Mount Everest. But, the simple, pleasant little UK, minus any real life-threatening creatures or top world mountains, still offers a wide range of thrill-inducing breaks.

First off, Britain adopted bunjee-jumping with a vengeance. One of the best spots for this thrill-filled few seconds is off Chelsea Bridge in London, where you have to ascend to a giant crane raised hundreds of feet above this historic capital city. The crane is sited just off the bridge, but the bungee drop itself is above the River Thames, on top of a site that King Henry VIII of the six wives fame and his daughter Queen Elizabeth would have known well.

As you plummet towards the waters and hope the elastic bungee cord is going to work, you have a few seconds to contemplate history – your own – before bouncing up and down safely, surreptitiously wiping away the sweat or other secretions.

Abseiling down mountain faces in the ranges of Scotland, Wales or the Peak District of England is another scary favourite. There is nothing like having your nose pressed to a rock face as you drop backwards down a steep cliff for making you wonder why on earth you are doing it.

For both foreigners and British residents, there is a sure-fire way of funding these holidays, whether a short, weekend break or a longer, more leisurely trip. UK teaching jobs are plentiful, are available throughout the country, and can often be short-term as well as permanent. British schools want you, and you want to come to Britain. A perfect match.

Whether you prefer the peaks or the pits, Britain can offer thrill-seekers the best, that is, the worst, of all experiences.
