Glamping Galicia
The biggest thrill I can experience from a holiday is doing something that is totally alien, totally outside of my comfort zone and totally different from my normal way of life. I most recently stayed at an eco glamping site in the beautiful Galicia (northern Spain) called Mino Valley Retreats where your accommodation choice was that of either a native American tipi or a Mongolian yurt. The exciting thing about staying at the retreat was the back to nature experience and waking up to the sole noise of a birds chorus. I opted to stay in the tipi as the yurt was described as the more ‘luxurious’option and I wanted to go for fullest eco experience I could. Cooking was done on a gas stove outside and as there was no electricity in the tipi what is known as an earth fridge was supplied to keep my food fresh in the summers heat. The retreat is hidden away in a lush green valley beside the meandering River Mino and you really do feel as though you are in the middle of nowhere. However not surprisingly you still get reception and the ability to access internet worldwide on your mobile phone even though you are out in the sticks – I spent most of the time with mine turned off!! Washing was done beneath the bliss of a solar shower and the compost toilet facilities meant that hygiene was not at all compromised. The experience is delightful and a completely back to basics way of living was a welcome escape from the normal hustle and bustle of everyday life.
I would urge anyone looking for a holiday with a difference to give it a go, the area is rich with sights to see and things to do – like swimming in the plunge pool of a nearby waterfall, an absolutely incredible experience!!
