Find excitement closer to home

Find excitement closer to home

Not all thrill seekers can afford to go bungee-jumping in New Zealand or snowmobile racing in Canada. Some of us only have UK teaching jobs, so we’re lucky if we can afford to spend a few days camping in the Lake District! Just because we have to stay a bit closer to home doesn’t mean we have to miss out on all the fun, though. There are centres dedicated to extreme sports all over the UK these days, though some parts of the country are better known for their thrill seeking than others.

One of the big adventure sports centres in the UK is based around the small Scottish town of Aberfeldy in Highland Perthshire. What’s really perfect about a holiday in this part of the UK is that there is plenty for the whole family to do; after all, not everyone is into white water rafting or mountain biking or off-roading! There are plenty of pleasant walking routes in the Perthshire hills, historic attractions like Dunkeld Cathedral and enough distilleries that you could visit two a day for a fortnight and still not have seen them all! I wouldn’t recommend signing up for any of the extreme sports that are offered in the Aberfeldy area if you’ve had a few drams though…

A lot of the activities take place on the River Tay, which is much narrower and faster-flowing here than the wide expanse of water that you find in Dundee, where the river meets the sea. There is even a world championship standard kayaking course. A word of warning: don’t have one lesson and then try and show off to your kids that you can make it through without getting wet. They don’t call it world championship standard for nothing!
